Unmanned Ground Vehicle on battlefield

Estonian company Milrem's UGV tested first time in military training

Milrem developed unmanned ground vehicle what can drive thru hard landscapes and can be operated from distance. All equipment is hided inside crawler so there is more room for goods and devices to move.

Vehicle called THeMIS (Tracked Hybrid Modular Infantry System) passed tests successfully.

Military personnell from logistics battalion tested ilrem vehicle for three days. Usually they move things by heavy transportation vehicles, but this light-weight device without driver is much more convenient and mobile.

All this what we moved by foot from one place to another we can do now with these crawler machines, said corporal of logistics battalion Stern Ilves, who tried to control this vehicle. Ilves believes that this kind of vehicles will do transportation in heavy conditions much easier.

UGV (unmanned ground vehicle) is vehicle that operates while in contact with the ground without an onboard human presence. UGV can be used for many applications where it may be inconvenient, dangerous, or impossible to have a human operator present.

Main advatages of device are diesel-electric drive (can be used as fully electrical); remote-operated drive (can be autonomous); very compact and lightweight modular suspended track system.
THeMIS can drive at speeds up to 50 km/h, have weight 850 kg and payload 700 kg. Efficient work period is 8 hours with fully charged batteries and toped up gas tank.
